Or Go Down in Flame: A Navigator's Death over Schweinfurt
Published in Hardcover by Sarpedon Pub (October, 1993)
Author: W. Raymond Wood
Average review score:

Exemplary history.
(The numerical rating above is a default setting within Amazon's format. This reviewer does not employ numerical ratings.)

Author Wood, a Professor of Anthropology, brings his professional skills to bear on his brother's death at Second Schweinfurt (October 14 1943) and in the process has produced a remarkable example of military research.

In addition to the expected material on context, units, and individuals, Professor Wood's investigations turned up the manufacturing history of the airplane (down to the exact cost), the position of the plane within the ill-fated flight, the probable Luftwaffe pilot who shot it down, eyewitnesses on the ground, and more. Of particular interest is the brief history of the Graves Registration Command and its commendable work in a very difficult but unsung assignment.

Thoroughly researched, beautifully readable, Professor Wood's book is a fitting memorial to Lt. Elbert Wood, navigator of the "Wicked WAAC". With photos, maps, documents, diagrams, sources, bibliography, index. First rate work; highly recommended.

Excellent, with info to help you research lost servicemen.
An excellent story of the author's research into the facts concerning his brother's dimly-remembered death during World War II. The author chases down service records, mission histories, eyewitness accounts, and battle participants to reconstruct his brother's story, using that as a window on the broader subject of the infamous "Second Schweinfurt" bomber raid. Especially valuable is the book's appendix, which lists addresses of U.S. Military and other government and private organizations which make available a surprising amount of detailed information about individuals' service careers and the events attending their deaths, recoveries, and post-war "repatriations". This book induced me, with my Father's help, to turn my Uncle's loss over Vienna from a mere War Department telegram into a rich and interesting story, much to the surprise and satisfaction of my family. (See also, 'Wings of Morning: the story of the last American bomber shot down over Germany in World War II' by Thomas Childers for similar content and treatment.)

An Oscar Otter (Maurice Pledger Pop-up Series)
Published in Hardcover by Templar Publishing (10 November, 1997)
Authors: A.J. Wood and Maurice Pledger
Average review score:

Some of the best board books ever!
We purchased Maurice Pledger board books (Oscar Otter, Olive Owl and Billy Bunny) for our child at 6 months and at 2 years old they are still favorites. Here are just some of what we love about them. The illustrations are spectacular. They accurately represent the wildlife being depicted. There is a great variety of textures to appeal to a child's desire to touch and feel. Our child's favorite page is the "sticky" plant in Olivia Owl. They encourage interaction with questions like "How many shiny beetles has he found on the rose bush?" (from Billy Bunny) and requests like "Tickle her orange tummy." (from Oscar Otter). They are oversized for board books (approx. 9x11 inches), which our child loves. They give children nice big pictures to look at.

A wonderful learning tool
I purchased this book for my daughter when she was 7 months old and she has read it everyday since. The illustrations are very detailed and so beautiful. Every page has a texture for her to feel and now that she is 14 months old she likes to put my finger to the textures and see my reaction. She has learned to identify animals and insects, colors and textures. She still loves to explore the pages and we read this book at least ten times a day! I would recommend this book to any parent with a child ready to learn!

Our Story: New Kids on the Block
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Juv (June, 1990)
Authors: Joseph McIntyre, Jonathan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, and New Kids on the Block
Average review score:

New Kids rocks!
I bought this book several years ago when the Kids were famous and popular. This is above all, the best book. The Kids wrote it themselves, and have loads of childhood pics of each other. It also talked about what it was like growing up, and how they got together. I've read the whole book several times, and I never tire of it. New Kids have always been #1 in my heart, and they always will be.

An excellent story, written in the boys own words
In most of thees New Kids books, the facts are not always accurate, but in this one they are dead on. This book was written by the kids, and tell each side of the story (from their point of view) It has some seldomly published pictues of the Kids and their famillies. Well worth the investment.

P-38 Lightning

Author: Pamela Reynolds-Wood
Average review score:

very interesting read
if your into the men who flew this a/c then buy this book. half of this book is written on individual men who flew it, what happened to them then and where they are now. it also breaks down kills of the aircraft by ww2 combat units. 97 squadrons, 37 groups. very good read. bolillo_loco

One of the "TOP 10 MUST HAVE" P-38 books.
If you're the type of person who wants to know the details, then this is one of the books you must have. Photos and information contained in this book are not found elsewhere. Pamela Reynolds-Woods is not an aviation author I recognise, but I would not hesitate to buy another of her aviation books, particularly a P-38 book. Facts are compressed into one, two, and three page summaries of specifications, battles, campaigns, theaters, fighter groups and squadrons, and personal stories. A number of important lists are herein, and not in any other of the 40+ P-38 books I've read. Some 50+ bios on pilots and crew-chiefs are here, look no further. Want to know about WASPs and the P-38, they're here too. Check your 6, and your wallet now. Go get one.

Paddle Whispers
Published in Paperback by Pfeifer-Hamilton Pub (November, 1992)
Author: Douglas Wood
Average review score:

A superb book
This is not a how-to book about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). (For that look to Patricia Bell's superb "Roughing it Elegantly.") Instead, Paddle Whispers explains why we go into the BWCAW, with its often attendant miseries, at all. The BWCAW is a wonderful, magical place and Douglas Wood captures its essence in all its glory in this masterful work. It's a quick read as well, and so is a wonderful introduction for the person wondering why so many find the BWCAW irresitible.

This book will transport the BWCAW veteran back into the midst of his/her favorite memories of past trips, and will provide inspiration for those considering their first adventure in the wilderness. For those who never intend to experience the wilderness first-hand, Paddle Whispers is a wonderful, spiritual, inspiring work in its own right.

A must-read for everyone, I purchased many copies as gifts for friends.

Captures the essence of the BWCAW.
Not since Sigurd F. Olson has a writer captured the true essence of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Wood describes the spirituality and adventure of this magical place. A very quick read, full of great sayings, and stories. Perfect to read chapter by chapter (of course in front of a roaring campfire). A must read for any BWCAW veterans. It will transport you back any time you pick it up.

The Painted Word
Published in Paperback by Art Books Intl Ltd (January, 2000)
Author: Dave Wood
Average review score:

A wonderful visual experience!
The Painted Word can be appreciated by any artlover, not only calligraphers. The book is filled to the brim with an incredible variety of unique calligraphic artwork. This is not just a book of words! It brought me inspiration and immense pleasure. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves fine art and beautiful words.

Inspirational
This book is a gallery of beautiful and creative calligraphic works. Some of the examples combine the written word together with other mediums such as sculptured paper words and figures, which gives the piece a three dimensional look.

A definate must for Calligraphy enthusiasts

Pens from the Wood Lathe: Step-By-Step Instructions for the Wood Turner
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (June, 1996)
Author: Dick Sing
Average review score:

Great how to on making pens
64 pages, full color, 9 gallery pages. Step by step pictures with detailed text on how to make pens/pencils on the lathe. This book was a must for making my first pen, and a great reference as I have progressed. Pens include: Standard twist (and pencil), Dome-top, Rollerball and Fountain, Cigar pen, Flat-top click pen, Flat-top twist pen, and desk pen.

An outstanding presentation of "How-to" for pen making.
A very clear and concise presentation of what is required for making excellent writing instuments. Great color photos of all materials and instructions of each step in the selection of woods, and hardware, how to drill, match and assemble the components. The number of ways to varie the appearance of the instruments. He does not go into the discusion of lathes. He concentrates making pens and pencils and the variations that can be created. I have his other book, "UNIQUE & UNUSUAL PENS from the wood lathe" and I refer to them quite ofen for new ideas. I also refer to "TURNING PENS AND DESK ACCESSORIES" by Mike Cripps which I also use

Petrified Wood : The World of Fossilized Wood, Cones, Ferns, and Cycads
Published in Hardcover by Western Colorado Publishing Company (01 September, 1998)
Authors: Frank J. Daniels, Brooks B. Britt, and Richard D. Dayvault
Average review score:

Blaze of color
As the various reviews point out this book is a blaze of color. Excellently photographed and excellently printed this volume gives a good impression of how beautiful petrified wood can be. This work is perfectly suited as a coffee table book.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.

Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.

Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood
The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.
